This is my interpretation. He feels as if he is surrounded by fake people, or, if you have read Catcher in the Rye, "Phonies." He feels as though everyone is just going through the motions of their lives, and he does not want to go through that cycle himself. Therefore, it is very fitting that this song was used in Donnie Darko, a movie all about loneliness and isolation.
